Chapter 01 · The crossing

What the Dar–Zanzibar journey is really like

The principal passenger route crosses from central Dar es Salaam to Malindi Port on the edge of Stone Town, Unguja. Its great advantage is geography: both ports are close to the urban centres, so there is no second airport transfer simply to reach Stone Town.

Fast ferries commonly show a scheduled journey of about one hour, while some services are listed closer to 90 minutes. Treat that as time on the water, not total journey time. You still need to reach the right terminal, report early, complete document and baggage checks, board, disembark and collect luggage.

Passengers landing on an international flight should plan from the scheduled aircraft arrival—not the moment they expect to leave the airport. Immigration, baggage and Dar traffic sit ahead of the ferry's own reporting window. A later sailing or an overnight in Dar is usually more resilient than a tight self-connection.

Chapter 02 · Schedules

Current departures and how to read them

Schedules are operational information, not a permanent promise. Weather, maintenance, vessel changes and demand can alter a sailing. The tables below combine published operator frequency with current marketplace listings. Reconfirm the exact date and reporting instruction before travelling.

A morning sailing leaves more daylight and usually more recovery options if plans change. An afternoon departure can suit an easy day in Dar, but it leaves less room for a beach transfer after arrival. Never choose a ferry immediately after an international landing—or immediately before a long-haul departure—on timetable arithmetic alone.

Why the times differ

An operator may publish a daily frequency while a booking result exposes extra class-specific or date-specific rows. That does not mean every displayed time runs every day. The selected-date result and confirmation take precedence over this guide.

Chapter 03 · Tickets and prices

Published fares, age bands and the final total

Azam Marine publishes a clear route fare table for residents and non-residents. These figures are a strong reference, but the checkout total can still reflect booking charges, exchange rates or optional services. Zan Fast does not expose an equally consistent public fare table in the official material reviewed, so a live result is safer than a copied or invented price.

Azam published one-way reference fares
ClassResident adultResident childNon-resident adultNon-resident child
EconomyTZS 40,000TZS 30,000USD 35USD 30
BusinessTZS 50,000TZS 50,000USD 40USD 40
VIPTZS 80,000TZS 80,000USD 60USD 60
RoyalTZS 120,000TZS 120,000USD 100USD 100

For this fare table, Azam defines a child as age 5–11 and an adult as 12 or older. Its booking page says children under five are not eligible for ticket bookings; families should confirm how the operator records and boards a younger child before paying. Resident fares require the accepted evidence of resident status and should not be selected simply because a visitor is staying in Tanzania.

Before you pay

  1. Match the passenger name to the passport or accepted travel document.
  2. Read the change rules: Azam's published terms require office notice before departure and do not refund a missed sailing; Zan Fast says changes must be requested at least two hours before departure.
  3. Check currency and total: compare the final amount, not only the first fare shown.
  4. Save the confirmation offline with the terminal, reporting time and booking reference visible.

Published fares and conditions can change. The booking result and terms shown for the selected sailing govern the purchase.

Chapter 04 · Azam Marine

Kilimanjaro ferries and a mixed fleet

Azam Marine operates the familiar Kilimanjaro-branded fast ferries. Its current fleet page lists Kilimanjaro IV, V, VI and VII, but those vessels do not have identical layouts. That is why a class may appear on one departure and disappear on another even when the route is the same.

Selected official fleet details
VesselCapacityPublished class layoutService speed
Kilimanjaro VII520 passengersRoyal 18 · VIP 72 · Economy 43033 knots
Kilimanjaro VI540 passengersRoyal 16 · VIP 48 · Business 94 · Economy 34232 knots
Kilimanjaro V522 passengersSundeck, main deck, upstairs and first-class areas30 knots

Use fleet specifications as orientation, not a vessel guarantee. Azam states that services and features vary by ship and that last-minute substitution can happen. A ticket class belongs to the assigned departure, not to every boat in the fleet.

Operator rules worth knowing

Azam publishes a 25 kg baggage allowance per passenger, with excess baggage charged separately. It also applies strict restrictions to carrying and consuming alcohol. Check the current ticket terms if either point affects your trip.

For the complete operator-specific fare matrix, age bands and change rules, read the Azam Marine ticket guide.

Chapter 05 · Zan Fast Ferries

A second operator with wider regional reach

Zan Fast serves Dar es Salaam and Unguja while also publishing routes to Pemba and Tanga. Its official fleet currently lists Zanzibar 1 and Zanzibar 2 at 475 seats each, Zanzibar 3 at 615 seats and Sea Star 1 at 1,300 seats. The assigned vessel and class mix can differ by route and date.

The operator describes four daily Dar–Zanzibar services, two daily Zanzibar–Pemba services except Friday, and twice-weekly Pemba–Tanga service. It also lists Dar–Pemba among its routes. Precise regional departure times remain date-sensitive, so frequency is more dependable for early planning than a screenshot of a particular day's timetable.

Changes and disruptions

Zan Fast says a change should be reported at least two hours before departure; requests made after the vessel has left are not accepted for rescheduling or refund. It also notes that weather can affect schedules. If the crossing feeds an expensive flight or fixed tour, protect the connection with time rather than assuming the published departure will absorb every delay.

For route frequencies, fleet context and regional booking advice, read the Zan Fast ferry guide.

Chapter 06 · Ticket classes

Choose the cabin, not just the class name

Class names are not fully standardised between operators. “VIP” on one vessel is not automatically equivalent to “VIP” on another, and a class shown in a marketplace filter may not be available on every sailing. Compare the actual description attached to the departure.

Azam Marine cabin classes

VIPUSD 6072 seats on VII and 48 on VISeat format and included service
RoyalUSD 100Smallest published zone: 18 seats on VII and 16 on VIAmenities and the vessel assigned to the sailing

The official material verifies fare tiers and selected vessel capacities but does not promise one universal seat, meal or lounge specification across the fleet. Royal is the highest published tier; Business is not automatically present. Check the cabin description attached to the chosen sailing.

PlatinumHigher premium category on selected servicesVessel, seating and included facilities
VIP CabinPrivate six-passenger cabin where offeredWhether the fare is per cabin or passenger and the permitted occupancy

Zan Fast describes snacks and soft drinks particularly for Gold, Platinum and VIP passengers, plus Wi-Fi, charging, restrooms and entertainment across its onboard offer. It does not publish a sufficiently precise route-by-route amenity matrix to treat each item as guaranteed. Connectivity and individual facilities can also fail, so download essentials and arrive with a charged phone.

A higher class can improve the seat and cabin environment. It cannot shorten the route or calm the sea.

Which class should you book?

Economy is the practical choice for a short crossing when budget leads. Upgrade when quieter surroundings, more personal space or the particular cabin shown matters to you. For a family, compare the total price and seating arrangement rather than assuming the top class is automatically the easiest.

Chapter 07 · On board

Seating, open decks and the hour at sea

Boarding staff direct passengers to the cabin or area printed on the ticket. Keep your passport, phone, money, medicine and fragile items in a small bag with you; larger luggage may be stored separately. Air-conditioned cabins can feel cool, while access to an outside deck depends on the vessel, weather and crew instructions.

A compact carry-on

  • Passport, ticket and any residence evidence
  • Phone, charging cable and power bank
  • Regular medicine and any clinician-approved motion-sickness remedy
  • Water and a light snack where permitted
  • A warm layer for air-conditioned seating
  • Hotel address and transfer contact saved offline

If you are prone to motion sickness, sit where the boat's movement feels least pronounced, look toward the horizon and avoid long periods reading a screen. Eat lightly and ask a pharmacist or doctor about suitable medication in advance; some remedies cause drowsiness and are not right for everyone.

Chapter 08 · Dar es Salaam terminal

Finding the port and arriving prepared

The main passenger-ferry area is on Sokoine Drive in central Dar es Salaam, near St Joseph Cathedral and the waterfront. Azam's official contact page describes its office as opposite the cathedral. Use the exact terminal or reporting-office instruction on your confirmation because check-in and boarding points can be described differently.

Before leaving

Show the driver the booking confirmation, not only “Zanzibar ferry.” Allow for Dar traffic, unloading and finding the correct counter. Keep unsolicited port assistance at arm's length unless the person is clearly identified.

At the terminal

Have the passenger names, passports and ticket ready. Complete baggage and security checks, then remain close enough to hear boarding instructions. Do not leave check-in until the final minutes.

Chapter 09 · Arrival in Zanzibar

Malindi Port and the first steps into Stone Town

Passenger ferries arrive at Malindi Port in Zanzibar City, beside Stone Town. Zanzibar Ports Corporation identifies Malindi as the busy passenger terminal serving the city. The waterfront location is convenient, but disembarkation, document checks and luggage collection still take time.

Keep the ticket and any luggage receipt until every bag is in your possession. If your accommodation is inside Stone Town, a car may stop at the nearest accessible street rather than at the final doorway. Ask the hotel for a named meeting point. Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Jambiani require a much longer road transfer; pre-arrange it or use a clearly identified taxi.

Chapter 10 · Airport connections

When a ferry and a flight share the same day

A same-day connection is not protected: the airline does not normally wait for a ferry, and the ferry does not wait for a delayed flight. Immigration, baggage, road traffic, port reporting and weather create several independent failure points. The most exposed plan is an afternoon ferry into Dar followed by a long-haul departure that evening.

Three common connection decisions
SituationConservative planning baselineSafer alternative
International arrival at DAR → ferryAt least 4 hours between scheduled arrival and ferry departureLater sailing or overnight in Dar
Domestic arrival at DAR → ferryAt least 3 hoursChoose a departure with another sailing behind it
Ferry arrival in Dar → international flightAt least 5 hours; more if missing the flight is costlyCross the previous day and stay in Dar

These are conservative editorial planning assumptions, not operator guarantees or live traffic estimates.

Illustrative connection

An international arrival before a midday ferry

  1. Flight scheduled to land at DAR
  2. Hypothetical airport exit after immigration and baggage
  3. Target arrival at the passenger port after traffic
  4. One-hour reporting point for a 12:30 sailing
  5. Approximate Stone Town arrival if the sailing runs to schedule

This example contains assumptions, not a promise. A late aircraft, slow baggage delivery or heavy traffic can consume the entire buffer.

Chapter 11 · Entry, documents and insurance

What to check before reaching the port

A Tanzanian visa, where required, covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar; there is not a separate tourist visa for this domestic sea crossing. Tanzania Immigration advises eligible travellers to use its official portal, carry a passport valid for at least six months with an unused visa page, and hold a return or onward ticket. Rules depend on nationality and status.

Mandatory Zanzibar inbound insurance

Zanzibar Insurance Corporation states that inbound insurance is mandatory for foreign visitors, including travellers from EAC and SADC countries and travellers who already hold private travel or medical cover. The currently published price is USD 44 for an adult, USD 22 for a child and USD 22 for travellers from EAC or SADC countries, with cover for up to 92 days. Prices and exemptions can change, so verify them on the official portal close to travel.

Do not buy visas or mandatory insurance from a lookalike domain. Government guidance specifically directs visa applicants to the official immigration portal, and the insurance FAQ directs visitors to the official Zanzibar portal linked above.

Chapter 12 · Luggage, children and seasickness

The details that shape travel day

Luggage

Azam publishes a 25 kg allowance per passenger and charges for excess. Other allowances can vary by operator, class and item type. Label checked bags, photograph any receipt, and keep documents, medicine, valuables and electronics in your own carry-on. Ask in advance about bicycles, surfboards, diving equipment or unusually large pieces.

Travelling with children

Confirm the child's age category before buying, especially for children under five. Bring the child's passport or accepted document, a light layer for the cabin, water, familiar snacks where allowed, medicine and one offline activity. At busy terminals, one adult can manage documents while the other stays with children and luggage.

Motion sensitivity

Sea conditions change with weather and season. A premium class does not remove motion. Choose a seat based on crew guidance, watch the horizon, eat lightly and obtain professional advice about medication before travel. If seasickness could make a critical flight connection unmanageable, consider crossing the previous day—or flying instead.

Alcohol restrictions

Azam's published terms tightly restrict carrying and consuming alcohol. Do not assume that a sealed bottle in luggage is permitted; check the operator's current terms first.

Chapter 13 · Pemba and regional routes

Beyond the Dar–Stone Town crossing

Unguja is not the end of the passenger network. Zan Fast officially lists Unguja–Pemba, Dar–Pemba and Pemba–Tanga routes. Its published frequency is two daily Unguja–Pemba services except Friday and two Pemba–Tanga services per week. Current marketplace listings often show Mkoani Sea Port for Pemba and Tanga Port for the mainland.

Regional route planning
RoutePublished patternWhat to confirm
Unguja ↔ PembaTwo daily except FridayExact time, class and Mkoani terminal instruction for the date
Pemba ↔ TangaTwice weeklyOperating day, intermediate stops and total journey time
Dar es Salaam ↔ PembaOfficially listed route; schedule variesWhether the selected journey is direct or routed via Zanzibar

Regional sailings are less forgiving of a missed departure because there may be fewer alternatives. Confirm the route again shortly before travel, carry offline accommodation details and avoid a same-day chain that depends on the last weekly or daily connection.

Chapter 14 · Ferry versus flight

Which journey fits the itinerary?

The ferry is usually most attractive when you are already in central Dar es Salaam and staying in or near Stone Town. Flying becomes more compelling when you are connecting through an airport, are highly motion-sensitive, or need to reach a part of Zanzibar where the airport produces an easier road transfer.

Decision guide
ConsiderationFerryFlight
City-centre accessStrong for central Dar and Stone TownRequires airport transfers and check-in
ExperienceSea crossing and harbour arrivalShort aerial journey
Weather sensitivitySea state can affect comfort and operationWeather can still delay flights, but avoids sea motion
BaggagePublished operator allowance appliesAirline weight and size rules can be stricter
ConnectionsUnprotected from airline schedulesPotentially simpler when already at DAR or ZNZ

Compare door-to-door time rather than the advertised duration alone. A one-hour flight is not a one-hour journey after airport transfers and check-in; a one-hour ferry is not a one-hour journey after traffic and port reporting. The better choice is the one with fewer fragile connections around it.

Chapter 15 · Planning, checklist and FAQ

Turn the research into a calm travel day

Once the route is booked, the job becomes simple: verify the terminal and reporting time, prepare documents, protect any onward connection and save the essentials offline. Checklist progress is stored only in this browser.

Day trips

A same-day return gives Stone Town less usable time than two sailing times suggest. Reporting, boarding and disembarkation occur twice, and a late outbound boat can compress the visit. Book both directions, choose a modest plan near the waterfront and know the final reporting time before leaving the port area.

Return before a flight

Work backwards from airline check-in, then add the airport drive, port exit and a delay margin. For an expensive international departure, crossing to Dar the previous day is usually the most robust choice.

Families

Confirm every child's fare category and document, keep one compact essentials bag accessible and divide terminal tasks between adults. Do not discover the under-five booking procedure at the check-in desk.

Tight connections

Neither ticket protects the other. If there is no later ferry or flight that still saves the itinerary, the connection has very little resilience even when the arithmetic looks possible.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers before you leave

Tickets and schedules

How long is the ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar?

Many current fast-ferry departures are scheduled for about one hour, while some are closer to 90 minutes. Add reporting, checks, boarding and luggage collection to plan the real journey.

How many ferries run each day?

Azam currently lists four principal daily departure times in each direction, and Zan Fast officially describes four daily Dar–Zanzibar services. The precise date result governs because schedules can change.

Which operator is best?

There is no universal winner. Compare the departure that fits, assigned vessel, available class, change conditions and final total for your date.

Can I change or refund a ticket?

Conditions differ. Both operators require action before departure, and a missed sailing may not be refundable. Read the exact fare terms before payment.

Documents and boarding

Do I need my passport?

Yes, carry the passport or accepted travel document used for the booking. Identity and status checks can occur even though the mainland–Zanzibar trip remains within Tanzania.

How early should I arrive?

Azam publishes a minimum one-hour reporting rule. Follow the instruction on your confirmation when it asks for more time.

Is Zanzibar visitor insurance included in the ferry ticket?

Do not assume so. It is a separate entry requirement for foreign visitors and should be arranged or verified through the official Zanzibar portal.

Where do ferries arrive in Zanzibar?

Dar passenger services arrive at Malindi Port beside Stone Town in Zanzibar City. Confirm the terminal printed on the booking.

On board and connections

What luggage can I bring?

Azam currently publishes a 25 kg allowance per passenger. Check the selected operator and ticket for the governing limit and special-item rules.

Is a premium class worth it?

Upgrade when the documented cabin and extra comfort justify the price. Every class travels on the same vessel and experiences the same sea conditions.

Can I connect from the ferry to an international flight?

It is possible with a large margin, but the connection is unprotected. Crossing the previous day is safer when missing the flight would be costly.

What if I get seasick?

Watch the horizon, eat lightly and seek professional advice about medication in advance. Consider flying when motion sensitivity is severe.
